The primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security rests on the shoulders of United Nations Security Council. The UNSC comprises of 15 Members, each accounting for one vote. Under the Charter of United Nations, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions.

 

The Security Council takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression.

Its powers include the establishment of peacekeeping operations, the establishment of international sanctions, and the authorization of military action through Security Council resolutions
